Candle Safety

General directions & warnings for the safe & careful use of candles

·Place a suitable holder in a safe, level position, away from flammable materials, heat and draughts.

·Remove all packaging and labels. Secure the candle in an upright position in a holder before lighting.

·Take care not to damage the wick, or drop any foreign material, e.g. Match heads, in the wax pool.

·Place candles at least 10 cm (4 inches) apart and ensure that there is ample room above the flame to burn safely.

·To prevent the wick from smoking trim to approximately 1 cm.

·Never allow the candle to come into contact with the holder and ensure that any decorative candle rings are removed before lighting the candle.

·Never leave a burning candle unattended.

·Never blow a candle out. Always extinguish with a candle snuffer or the back of a metal spoon, taking care not to damage the wick.

·Never touch or move a candle holder containing a burning candle.

·Take care not to allow any molten wax to come into contact with the skin and handle candle holders with care they may be hot enough to burn you.

·Always keep candles and candle holders away from children and animals.

·For safety and to achieve optimum burning times never burn a candle for more than two hours continuously. Extinguish and allow to cool fully before re-lighting.

·Ensure that the area that a candle is burning in is ventilated.

·Ensure that furniture is fully guarded against the heat and wax from a candle.

Specific directions & warnings, these are in addition to the general directions and warnings.

Tea lights

·Always burn tea lights in a suitable holder.

Floating candles

·Only use floating candles in a suitable container filled with water.

Novelty candles

·Novelty candles are designed to be decorative.

·Choose a large non flammable stand as irregular shaped candles may drip excessively.

Gel wax, room fragrances & wax filled containers

·These items will liquefy during use. Ensure that the container is undamaged, made of a suitable material and is capable of containing hot molten product.

·Place on a heat resistant surface.

·The container may become hot during use, do not touch nor move until the candle is extinguished and fully cooled.

·Never allow the flame to come into contact with the container.

Sets including decorative glass nuggets

·Always ensure that decorative glass nuggets and any similar items are stored and used out of the reach of children and animals as they may represent a choking hazard.
